Story:
Piranha 3DD picks up where the previous 2010 release Pirahana 3D left off what happened at Lake Victoria. Which was a graphically gory remake of the 1978 cult hit. This time though it’s “double the action, double the horror, and double the D’s”. Having not seen the previous two films, I went into this movie after reading good things about it but not knowing what to expect. The majority of the film takes place at the newly opened ‘Big Wet’ water park where unsuspecting guests find themselves fish food of hungry piranhas who escape through the drainage systems.
The film is categorised as both a comedy and horror movie, however, I found it is much more comedy than horror, most of the horror is comical and cracked me up.
It is a raunchy movie that is silly but mindless fun. The film has numerous celebrity cameos. Richard Dreyfuss reprises his jaws role and makes a cameo in the opening scene. A guest appearance from Christopher Lloyd who is always great and plays another ‘doc’ type character, an expert on piranhas who is studying their strange new behaviours. Also making a cameo is David Hasselhoff who plays himself as the pool lifeguard, and is also very funny.
This won’t be everyone’s cup of tea, it has an R rating and won’t appeal to older viewers. It does get a bit over the top, especially in one nasty scene where a couple is having sex and a piranha intervenes (not to spoil it too much).
There’s a fair bit of nudity, naked women, partying, and sex scenes. For example, the water park owner (David Koechner) has hired strippers for his pool and installed a ‘cooch cam’ underwater. It’s frat-type humour and profanity.
3D
I found the 3D to be very enjoyable in Piranha 3DD. As I mentioned, it is mindless, hilarious, and dumb fun. Unlike Piranha 3D, 3DD was shot natively using 3D rigs and looks great. It was cinematographer Alexandre Lehmann’s first 3D film.
Pop:
There are vicious piranhas jumping directly out at you. A lot of water splashing out. Beer kegs spilling onto you, and vomit yacking out onto your lap.
When s**t hits the fan, severed bodies, blood, breasts, vomit, and penises are flung out of the screen. There’s plenty of pop as Piranha 3D does not take itself seriously at all.
Depth:
The depth is strong in this film, having been planned for a conversion from the start. It feels and looks like a natively shot 3D film. The foreground, middle-ground, and background objects are planned nicely in the majority of scenes. There are a few slow-motion running sequences where it looks nice also.
It does however get a bit too dark in some scenes, especially some murky underwater shots such as the fish in the cave scenes and drainage pipes.
Verdict:
If you want a movie just to relax and have a few laughs after a few drinks or puffs, Piranha 3DD is a great choice. Kick back, unwind, and watch some killer fish and double d’s in 3D.
